Sedona, Arizona--
about two hours north of Phoenix and an hour south of Flagstaff is called "red rock country" because
--well--
it's full of red rocks!!

One of Sedona's most famous landmarks

Sedona
Sherrian and I just celebrated our 1st anniversary (May 20th, 2002) and spent a few days at our timeshare: The Ridge at the Sedona Golf Resort.

The view from our balcony at the Ridge at Sedona Golf Resort. Not bad, eh?

One of the perks of having our Sedona "time share" is that we can do cool things like stay for a few nights--on a whim--in an awesome place like Sedona for about $80 per night on "bonus time". That doesn't even include our 1-2 weeks of actual allocated time.

We use it every so often for fun getaways and family get-togethers.

The resort sits on one of the top golf courses in Arizona (still have yet to actually play it, though) and has many amenities like two pools, six or more jacuzzis, a spa/tennis club and is close to a nice outlet mall (if you like the shopping thing).

Downtown Sedona is only about 4-5 miles away and the drive is fabulous!

If you are from the midwest (like me) this kind of scenery will simply leave you speechless.

This is Highway 179 leaving The Ridge for downtown Sedona.

Courthouse Butte is to the right and Bell Rock is straight ahead.

Believe it or not--the scenery gets better from here.

As the saying goes . . . wish you were here. We loved our balcony for looking out at the golf course, enjoying the incredible night sky and enjoying quiet time with a favorite beverage.

Time to think about dinner . . . .

For a great meal, and even greater outdoor experience, make reservations at the Javalina Cantina for an hour or two before sunset on the outdoor patio.

The food is good. It's not a corporate-style restaurant. Local restauranteur, Mark Shugrue, owns and runs the place. It's great for showing off Sedona to out-of-towners.

Bring a jacket, though, just in case. We got a bit chilled until they finally fired up the propane heaters

Sherrian says:

"Stop taking pictures and help me eat this!!"

Bruce says:

"OK-OK--I'll help you eat, but get this sunset out of my face!!"

Just before we head back up the road to Flagstaff (home) we make a pilgrimage to the Gretchen Warren Chapel at the Verde Valley School where we got married last year. It wasn't so much a pilgrimage as an architectural field trip. We bought 36 acres just west of Flagstaff and we would love to build something architecturally similar to the Chapel for our own place in the high desert.

How's this for a cool look?

What a grand set of flagstone steps to set off the gorgeous whitewashed look of the chapel!
